Today’s image is a bouquet of flowers I sent to my wife yesterday for our seven year anniversary. I sent her a bouquet of roses (her favorite) and Star Burst Lilies. She loved it and it was a huge surprise for her since I tell her I will never send her flowers and it has been about 5 years since the last time I did. I like to keep her on her toes. The image was shot on a white seamless background. this past weekend I watched Zack Arias’s lighting class on CreativeLive. The class was amazing! I learned so much and he is a really great teacher, but more importantly a really great guy. I highly recommend the CreativeLive classes and especially Zack’s work.

Nicely done Adam. Gotta love that white seamless. Your reflection is pretty sweet too. Congrats on your 7 year anniversary!

Thanks! I actually used a piece of clear plexiglass on a white bench to get the reflection. I went out and bought some bifold doors for modifiers tonight and used those to help blow out the background, but I haven't been able to get the tile board yet. :) I did do a version with the white seamless lit to a nice medium gray and it was super cool that I could do it, but I think the flowers looked better on white. Much more of a fresh feeling to the image.

Very cool. I don't have the plexiglass, but I do have two pieces of the tileboard. Where did you pick up your bifold doors? Are you using AlienBees to blow out the back?

The plexiglass I got a while ago on a tip from Scott Kelby, so I luckily had it around. I got the bifold doors at a Menard's. It is a store like a Home Depot or Lowe's. I got two 36 inch ones and they were only like $27 each. Good deal for nice sturdy light modifiers! I am using AlienBees. I used 2 800s to blow out the background and a very small portable softbox on a hot shoe flash on camera right and then a 42 inch silver reflector on the left to light the flowers. That was one thing I really liked about the work shop. It was like Zack was teaching me how to use my equipment, because I use the exact same AlienBees (I have two 800s, but I need a 1600 yet), the exact same 5D Mark II and the same lenses he was using. It was great!

I'll have to check out the barn doors… hadn't picked those up yet. Very cool you had all the same equipment. That was my only complaint… if I don't have Alien Bees what else could I use to blow out the background. I tried a variety of other light modifiers but don't have anything strong enough. Guess I gotta save my pennies. :-)

Well, like he said, the good news is that they work pretty well and are cheap in relation to other stuff out there. Really you could use anything, I don't know what you have for gear, but all I have is those two 800's and a couple 580EX II. You could get by doing it with 400s turned up higher.
