I became very interested in taking pictures when I was in elementary school (I think 5th grade). I remember going to a camera store with my parents and seeing them pick out a camera to buy. They bought a Minolta SLR camera. I was fascinated by this gadget. The lens could come off (which I found out later was to put on different and better lenses!) and they had bought an external flash. I wanted them to let me play with it so badly, but of course they never would. A few years later, we were at a family wedding and my dad actually let me use the camera and take some pictures. I was instantly hooked! This was long before digital so I didn’t get to see the images right away, but just the sound of the shutter click and the feeling I got when taking the picture, I was hooked. It was a 35mm camera of course, and when we finally got the pictures developed, I loved looking through them. It was amazing.
A few years later, I was able to get a somewhat decent point-and-shoot camera that shot Kodak Advantix film. It was a cool camera that had a portrait mode, and actually took some really nice pictures. I shot a lot of film with that camera, but it was mostly just me playing around. No real instruction, just playing. I never really had any clue how to explore photography more or how to learn how to get better at it, and after a while, I had to move on to other things.
Fast forward about 5 to 8 years, and my wife Lori and I were expecting our first child. I knew that I really wanted to take a lot of pictures of our kids, but we didn’t have a really nice camera. I decided to go out and but the Canon Digital Rebel XT. This was the first digital camera that I ever owned. I still didn’t really know how to use it too well, but finally being the internet age, I had access to a lot more information on how to get better. I started reading forums and books. Taking photography classes and sharing my photographs for the first time with my friends. I was hooked again! I knew that I really loved photographing my family, and thought maybe I would like to do some nature or landscape photography, but I never had any intentions of taking anyone else’s picture. Some friends of ours talked me into taking pictures of their kids, and I really liked doing it. They really liked the pictures I did and I thought, you know, maybe I can make some money to upgrade and buy some more equipment.
I really fell in love with doing the sessions on the side, and I decided that I really wanted to do more and really wanted to start my own business. I opened my business in February 2008. I have been photographing weddings, seniors, children, families, and maternity sessions ever since then. I love different things about each, but they all give me such joy and satisfaction that I know it is what I will be doing for the rest of my life. I strive and work every day to get better at my photography skills and to try to serve my clients the best that I can. I am lucky enough to have a very supportive wife and family! I have been very lucky to have my wife help me out on photo shoots, and she shoots weddings with me as my second shooter. I am very lucky to get to do what I love and I hope it shows through in my images.
